Chocolate balls are seriously one of the best things to make with kids. No bake, lots of mess, no refined sugar, and heaps of fun. The no refined sugar bit is a big one for us. This recipe gets the delicious sweetness of dates to replace the refined sugar. For those children who gawk at the idea of dates – they won’t have a clue that dates are in them if you don’t tell them!
So here’s our recipe for chocolate balls. These ones have an orange flavour in them – you can swap out the orange and add in a little more of the other ingredients if you’d prefer to keep them chocolate-y.
1o Medjool dates
1 cup almonds or walnuts
2 tablespoons cacao or cocoa powder
2 tablespoons desiccated coconut
Orange juice from one orange
Orange rind from one orange
(If you’d prefer to make them nut free, swap the nuts with pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds)
Place the unseeded Medjool dates and all other ingredients into a blender, food processor or Thermomix.
Blend at high speed until the ingredients are all mixed well together.
If the mixture is way too soft, add in some more nuts/seeds. If it’s too hard, add in some more juice.
Roll into little balls and coat with coconut. Refridgerate for about an hour before eating one, then another, then another…
